Boyz II Men, four-time Grammy award winners, recently performed a benefit concert at the Germantown Performing Arts Center to honor the memory of Janice "Jan" Kleiner-Hooper and to raise awareness for ovarian cancer. Janice Kleiner Hooper Kleiner-Hooper was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1985 and fought a 16-month battle with this disease. She was adored, loved and admired by everyone who knew her. The determination and strength she showed throughout her life and especially during her last year had a tremendous effect on her friends, family and especially her two daughters, Nancy Hooper-Wright of Arlington, and Debbie Hooper-Roice of Kent, Wash., and her sister Cheryl Leedom of Escondido, Calif. Cheryl Kleiner Leedom and Nancy Hooper Wright on stage accepting awards on behalf of Janice Kleiner Hooper presented by American Idol's Alexis Grace and Memphis Grizzlies' Xavier Henry Unfortunately, symptoms for this disease are vague, making it difficult for early detection. They put together a show for the community with leaders from our community. Xavier Henry of the Memphis Grizzlies emceed the night; "American Idol" alumna Alexis Grace opened the concert; the Memphis mayor's office presented Boyz II Men with the keys to city and a proclamation announcing Oct. 13 as Boyz II Men Day. "This event was a humbling experience for me and my aunt. It meant so much to us that so many supported this concert. Looking back, it was a tough struggle to be 15 years old and lose my mother," said Hooper-Wright. "However, because my Aunt Cherie, sister and I watched our mom struggle with this disease with such courage and grace, we are stronger women today. It took 22 years to do something worthy of her memory and, as my aunt said, 'We know she was dancing in the aisles with us that night.'" Memphis Mayor Wharton speaking about Boyz II Men and Ovarian Cancer (The following story was originally in the Tri State Defender-by Sonia Young) What started as a simple post on Facebook grew into a star-studded night with the most commercially successful R&B group of all time. Four-time Grammy-winners Boyz II Men performed Wednesday night at the Germantown Performing Arts Center in honor of Memphian Janice Kleiner-Hooper who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 1987. Memphis Grizzlies rookie Xavier Henry and “American Idol” contestant Alexis Grace also lent their star power to the “Benefit for Love of Women” and silent auction, which benefited Memphis’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Foundation (OCAF). Memphis mayor AC Wharton Jr. appeared via video and sent his son, Andre Wharton, and Chief of Staff Bobby White to present Boyz II Men with a key to the city in recognition of their efforts to join in the fight against ovarian cancer. The Cause “You're just like your mother,” Cherly Leedom tells her niece. Nancy Wright said Leedom made the difference in her life. Hooper’s daughter, Nancy Wright, took to the social networking site to find help in spreading awareness about the deadly disease that took her mother’s life. “It said something like, ‘I want to do something in honor of my mother and her fight against ovarian cancer,’” said Wright. Wright was 15 when her mother died and remembers how difficult it was watching her mother working and caring for her two daughters while struggling with the affects of chemotherapy treatments. “I remember how hard she fought for us,” said Wright, as she recalled her mother’s fight to live after her diagnosis. Hooper was diagnosed with ovarian and colon cancers in September 1985 and was initially given only two weeks to live. Her sister, Cherly Leedom, said Hooper told the doctors, “No, I have things to do,” and fought to be there for her two daughters. Wright said there were days she would find her mother asleep in the car after school and would think the end had come. Hooper passed away 18 months after being diagnosed. After her mother’s death, Wright completed her last two years of high school while working two jobs and basically raising herself. She refused to give in to her grief and credits her mother’s example of steely determination. “She held on just long enough to make sure her daughters could make it (without her),” she said. She also credits Leedom for not allowing her to give up. “I could have become a druggie, a loser, and dropped out of school,” said Wright. “My aunt’s support inspired me.” Wright also remembers always knowing one day she would do something to bring awareness to the disease that robbed her of her mother. Which leads back to that post on Facebook and the magical night in honor of her mother. It took years after her mother’s death before she could even talk about, Wright shared, but once she opened up on Facebook, people began responding. One of those people happened to be good friends with the road manager for Boyz II Men. The Event Todd Hutchison, president of Hutch Entertainment, said it took some work, but before long, he had put together a benefit worthy of Hooper’s honor. With the help of Tracy Beaver of Beaver Maintenance and Construction, Hutchison was able to assemble Boyz II Men, Henry, Grace and Mayor Wharton to appear, and The Grizzlies and the University of Memphis to make donations for the silent auction. Henry served as emcee for the evening and Grace warmed up the crowd with her unique down-home delta vocals in an acoustic set. Both expressed honor at being asked to participate. “I remember making trips to Memphis as a child to visit my best friend DJ at St. Jude,” said Henry. “When I do these kinds of events, I always think of him.” Grace’s mind was on her mom and sister, who’ve both had positive influences on her life. “Anytime you benefit something like this, it’s an amazing thing,” she told the Tri-State Defender. Boyz II Men sat down with the Tri-State Defender after their performance to share what motivated them to do the concert. Group member Shawn Stockman said he has a friend who survived ovarian cancer. “To see how it changed her, brought her closer to God,” said Stockman, “she’s definitely on my mind tonight.” Wanya Morris said it’s all about bringing light to ovarian cancer so people will get checked out. It was wonderful being apart of the event, he said, and added that he was thinking about all of the women in his family. “I’m praying a prayer of protection over them,” he shared. During the show, Nathan Morris gave a shout out to OCAF’s Director of Survivor Outreach Carol Rodman. Earlier that day, Rodman had completed her last treatment. “One of the most important things about life is living,” said Morris, whose father survived prostate cancer. Wright encourages all women to learn more about the disease. “Know there’s more than one kind of cancer,” she said. Thanks! zz Top And Skynyrd Take To The Road As 'Rebels & Bandolero' 4/2/11 The Rebels & Bandoleros Tour starring ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd launches this May.Lynyrd Skynyrd’s most recently released album is God & Guns while ZZ Top’s forthcoming, as yet untitled, album is expected later this year.The two groups, whose respective histories have been intertwined since the early 1970s, are set for a string of tour dates together starting May 12 in Wichita, KS and continuing for the next three weeks.The tour marks the first time in years that the standard-bearers of Southern Rock will have toured so extensively together.The two bands first joined forces in 1974 when Houston-based ZZ Top invited Lynyrd Skynyrd, then an emerging new band from Jacksonville, to become part of The Outlaw Tour that year. Ultimately, ZZ Top, which had formed in 1969, would go on to become a band with one of the longest running original personnel line-ups -- Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard – in music history. Tragedy struck Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1977 when a plane crash took the lives of band members Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Today’s Lynyrd Skynyrd includes founding member Gary Rossington along with Johnny Van Zant, brother of the late Ronnie Van Zant, as well as Rickey Medlocke, Michael Cartellone, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Robert Kearns, Peter Keys Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase.
